Office (sex) politics

Out of the blue a colleague of mine asked me if I had a GF or where my life was headed in terms of love. I was surprised. I asked him why the sudden interest. He said he has been always interested but never dared to ask before because of my wall of silence when it came to such personal matters. I asked him if he was ready for the truth and if he can handle the truth. He replied in affirmative. And I asked him to ask me point blank and not to hold himself back. He asked me if I did not like girls to which replied with a careless perhaps. Then he asked asked me if I liked boys. I looked at him, eyes to eyes and whispered... perhaps.

Gay Muslim movie 'Naz + Maalik' explodes stereotypes

...An upcoming independent feature film borne out of director Jay Dockendorf's reaction to hearing about the FBI's program of secret spying in mosques in Brooklyn, "Naz + Maalik" explores the world of two closeted Muslim teens who have their Friday afternoon ruined by FBI surveillance.

...as attitudes progress, more and more gay Muslims are coming out into accepting mosque communities. The face of American Islam is changing, and this film reflects that truth without beating you over the head with it.

Though the American Muslim community is becoming increasingly diverse, the problem of ignorance and bigotry towards Islam is still an issue. In that sense, American Muslims share a history of prejudice with the black and gay communities, which all intersect in this film.

"The film considers Islamophobia through the lens of homophobia and homophobia through the lens of racism," comments Dockendorf. "I know they're very separate issues, but for some people, real people on whom these characters are based, they're completely linked and the balance is delicate." Read more

Hawaii becomes 15th U.S. state to legalize gay marriage

Hawaii's governor signed into law on Wednesday a bill extending marriage rights to same-sex couples, capping 20 years of legal and political rancor in a state regarded as a pioneer in advancing the cause of gay matrimony.

The new law, which takes effect on December 2, makes Hawaii the 15th U.S. state to legalize nuptials for gay and lesbian couples, rolling back a 1994 statute defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

"In Hawaii, we are all minorities, and we all deserve the same aloha," state Representative Chris Lee, a leading proponent of the measure, said before Governor Neil Abercrombie signed the bill.

Abercrombie said that despite misgivings by opponents who felt their religious beliefs were infringed, the measure served the "greater good" by more fully embracing gay and lesbian members of society, who had long felt marginalized. Read more

Europe's Hijras: Germany moving closer to gay marriage?

On Nov. 1, Germany became the first European nation to recognize a third gender for babies born with ambiguous genitalia. No longer will newborns be rigidly assigned to male or female. The new law doesn't require parents to declare any gender for such children, allowing parents to declare gender "undetermined" or "unspecified" on their birth certificates. The aim of the law was to take the pressure off parents who might make hasty decisions on sex-assignment surgery for newborns, and to fight discrimination against those who are intersex. One intersex person, according to the BBC, said years later, "I am neither a man nor a woman. I will remain the patchwork created by doctors, bruised and scarred."

German passports will have a third designation other than M or F -- X, for intersex, according to the Interior Ministry... "It's like the mystery of why people are gay....Some people have life-endangering conditions that require surgery, but most kids do not. You can make a gender assignment without surgery, and then see how identity develops. The science of knowing how a child will develop any gender identity is not very accurate. ... Nobody can answer the questions about why this happens...," said New York City psychiatrist Dr. Jack Drescher, who specializes in issues of gender identification, adding that the new German law "sounds like a good thing."

A report filed to the European Commission in 2011 described intersex people as "differ[ent] from trans [sexual or gender] people, as their status is not gender related but instead relates to their biological makeup (genetic, hormonal and physical features), which is neither exclusively male nor exclusively female, but is typical of both at once or not clearly defined as either.
